Graduate Program in Environmental Biotechnology (PBA)
The Graduate Program in Environmental Biotechnology (PBA) at the State University of Maringá (UEM) offers Master's and Doctoral degrees with a focus on Environmental Biotechnology.
The program is currently accepting applications for both Master's and Doctoral positions for the year 2025.
Program Overview:
The PBA aims to train professionals capable of studying, modifying, synthesizing, and producing compounds from living matter (microorganisms, animals, and plants). The goal is to develop processes and products that ensure greater economy, efficiency, competitiveness, and adaptability in their final use, all in an environmentally sustainable manner. The program emphasizes modern biotechnology, grounded in genetics, molecular biology, and bioprocesses.
Graduates are expected to exhibit critical thinking and creativity, possess knowledge of technological methods for industrial and scientific purposes, and have the ability to formulate and develop innovative and feasible industrial and scientific projects. This includes conducting appropriate bibliographic research, organizing ideas effectively, understanding major funding agencies for research and technological development, and being familiar with regulations concerning industrial property. Moreover, graduates should be able to present their ideas and acquired knowledge clearly and appropriately, both in written and oral forms. The technological processes or products resulting from their scientific research should adhere to principles of bioethics and biosafety.
Established over a decade ago, the PBA has recently published a commemorative book celebrating its 10-year anniversary. This publication serves as an academic resource for both undergraduate and graduate students in biotechnological, biological, and health sciences. It encompasses fundamental concepts and practical applications in biotechnology, reflecting the expertise of PBA researchers.
The program's curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of environmental biotechnology, supported by relevant and up-to-date scientific literature. Research conducted within the program incorporates internationally accepted methodologies, offering an instructive and educational perspective in the field.
Research Areas
The program encompasses three main research lines:
Biodiversity, Biocatalysis, and Biotransformation: This area focuses on the exploration of biological diversity to discover new catalysts and processes for transforming biological materials into valuable products.
Mutagenesis and Environmental Monitoring: This line investigates genetic mutations and develops methods for monitoring environmental changes and impacts.
Bioprospecting and Biological Control: This research area involves the exploration of natural resources to discover new bioactive compounds and the development of biological methods to control pests and diseases.
